My Story
I started my journey in real estate in 2006. Back then, Zillow and the big real estate websites didn’t exist yet, so I built an online strategy to showcase myself and my abilities and made learning the market my mission — touring 25 to 30 homes a day, even without clients to show them to, so I could understand why some homes sold and others didn’t. That mix of hard work, market knowledge, innovation and going against the grain has defined my career ever since.
I always dreamed of opening my own company, and once my wife Jennifer and I started having kids, I knew I had to — to do business the same way I want to do life: ethically, honestly, and with the utmost integrity. In January 2014, with Jennifer eight months pregnant with our second child, I launched Heyen Real Estate, the journey that led to Flatwater Realty, where I am owner and broker today.
Today I’m dual-licensed: I lead Flatwater Realty and serve as a Mortgage Loan Officer with Canopy Mortgage (NMLS #2075179), licensed in 12 states. In 2026, Flatwater Realty earned the Verified Excellence Award from the Consumer Ratings Institute. I’m also preparing to launch the A Way Home podcast and The Dual Advantage coaching program. Jennifer and I are raising our three kids in Omaha.
